Glór na nGael Competition 2016 winners announced!

During a special edition of the RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltacht programme Iris Aniar, Nóra Welby, Bainisteoir and Eoghan Mac Cormaic, Leas Cheannasaí Ghlór na nGael revealed the results of the 2016 Glór na nGael competitions. They announced grand total of up to €79,000 worth of prizes to be awarded to Irish language community groups and GAA clubs throughout Ireland.
The following 4 groups came out on top in their respective competition categories and are now in the running for the top prize of €20,000 and Glór na nGael trophy, an honour which will be announced at our prize giving ceremony in April: Glór Cheatharlach, Co. Carlow (Groups working with populations above 20,000), Cumann Forbartha Chois Fharraige, Co. Galway (Gaeltacht Groups), Glór na Móna, Belfast (Groups working with populations between 4,000 & 20,000) and Coiste Forbartha Charn Tóchair, Co. Derry (Groups working with populations under 4,000).
These awards recognise the outstanding work that voluntary groups undertake year in and year out to provide services and to build Irish speaking communities. It was evident during this years adjudication that the Irish language voluntary sector is going from strength to strength with volunteers releasing tremendous achievements for their communities.
The top prize in the competition for GAA clubs will be presented to CLG Na Piarsaigh, Ros Muc, Co. Galway and Gradam Ghlór na nGael will this year be awarded posthumously to Séamus Mac Géidigh, the Donegal broadcaster and sports commentator who died last year.
Nóra Welby thanked the competition’s main sponsor Foras na Gaeilge, along with Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Údaras na Gaeltachta, Department of Education and Skills, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, The GAA, and all other sponsors.
Uachtarán na hÉireann Micheál D. Ó hUiginn will present the prizes and announce the overall winner at the annual prize giving on Saturday 22 April in the Carton House Hotel, Maynooth.
