Teanga Tí had a busy weekend with day-long events in both Limerick and Roscommon.
Our annual Lá Spraoi is held in a different province every year and this year we were in Munster’s Coláiste Mhuire Gan Smál, Limerick. Twenty-nine families attended the event which included sensory workshops, circus skills, a STEM workshop, storytelling, story-telling through rap, Zumba and a singing workshop with Stiofán Ó Fearail from Seo Linn.
Further north, a large crowd gathered in the Walled Gardens at Strokestown House last Saturday, 6 June, for FunFest organised by Strokestown Park. At the heart of the festival was Féile Spraoi, the Irish-language tent, and it was the first time for Glór na nGael and Teanga Tí to take part in the event. They certainly made their mark.
According to the festival stewards, everyone was looking for directions to “Féile Spraoi”. The tent was full from start to finish, with fun through Irish as our main aim. Giggles brought laughter to all ages; Julie Anne de Brún brought the day to life with her stories and songs; and musicians Aidan Shannon and friends energised the crowd. Tura didn’t leave anyone sitting either, as he taught sean-nós dancing.
There was a lovely mix of Irish-only sessions and bilingual sessions, with art and games available as well so that there was something for everyone. Whilst it rained on and off throughout the day it certainly didn’t dampen the atmosphere at all.
For the past few years, Teanga Tí has been working hard to bring together the Irish-speaking community in Roscommon; we now have families from Rahara to Ballaghaderreen.
Teanga Tí is working with Irish-speaking families across 19 counties. These events play a key role in bringing them all together in order to create vibrant Irish speaking communities. If you live in Roscommon and are raising your children through Irish, or thinking of starting, get in touch with our development officer, Sinéad Ní Mhearnóg, on 083 449 7443 or sinead@glornangael.ie.
Rút Ní Mhurchú is our organiser in Munster and she can be contacted on rut@glornangael.ie or 086 838 8540.
Glór na nGael would like to express our thanks to our funders, Foras na Gaeilge and Roinn Forbartha Tuaithe agus Pobail agus Gaeltachta. We would also like to thank Funfest, Coláiste Mhuire Gan Smál and Comhluadar Luimnigh for their support in delivering these events.
