Support Scheme for parents raising a family through the medium of Irish

Cara Teanga Tí

Have you considered raising your children through the medium of Irish but you’re not sure where to start? Or are you raising your family through Irish and would like to connect with other families? Glór na nGael provides a support scheme called Cara Teanga Tí, and creates opportunities for parents who are raising children with Irish to meet and network.

Through the scheme, parents who are raising children with Irish, or those who are thinking about it, have the opportunity to discuss their decision as well as other issues that concern them with another parent who has already made the decision.

The scheme gives parents the opportunity to network together in a practical and strategic way. This service will be provided free of charge parent-to-parent.

Families register with our scheme for many reasons, for example a family may want to speak to another family;

  • If one parent speaks Irish and the other parent speaks English;
  • If they are raising their children with Irish abroad;
  • If they are raising their children in a trilingual setting;
  • If they have a child with specific needs, autism or speech delay for example.

Families can register with the scheme as offering support or requesting support by filling in the registration form here. An officer from Glór na nGael will contact the family and they will discuss what is involved. The officer will ask for information from the family regarding the needs or situation of the family and other information on networks, schemes and supports will be shared with the family if relevant. Families will then be connected based on their own context and requirements. Each family is in charge of the amount of time they give to and/or take from the scheme and of the preferred method of communication – phone call, physical visit, online video call etc.

More information about the scheme can be found here. Families are welcome to contact our Development Officer Sinéad who is in charge of the scheme on 083 4497443 or if they would like to discuss further.
