Glór na nGael is offering a Support Package to committees and groups who would like to develop networks of Irish speaking families.
Central to the project, a workshop will be organised to discuss the needs of the families in local areas. The workshop will provide the families with the opportunity to consider their own aspirations and challenges and provide a language planning basis for the area.
Talking about the importance of the language in the family, manager of Glór na nGael’s Teanga Tí department, Marcas Mac Ruairí, said: “It is in the family that we can best ensure that the richness of the Irish language is passed onto the next generation.
“This support package which we have put together will enable local committees to set about developing Irish as a family language in a measured and strategic way.
“A package of resources will be provided to all groups who take part in the workshop. The resources will help the committees set about awareness raising campaigns in their community, so that parents will be aware that they can choose Irish as their family language and of the benefits that accrue from that.
“It is through the establishment of networks and regular events that we will succeed in creating networks of Irish speaking families, providing them with the opportunity to come together, to get to know each and to be together as a community.”
Should any group wish a representative of Glór na nGael visit their area to speak about the support package, they should contact Marcas Mac Ruairí by email at marcas@glornangael.ie.
