On a beautiful spring morning, representatives from Foundation clubs gathered at Headquarters to discuss Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha.
This was the second time that Glór na nGael organised such an event, and it was undoubtedly a great success.
Irish Language Officers were present from all corners of the country — from Donegal to Kerry and from Galway to Dublin.
GAA Irish Language Officer, Jamie Ó Tuama, welcomed everyone and praised the participants for attending and for taking on the role of Irish Language Officers in their clubs. As he introduced the Department Manager, Cáit Ní Choirbhín, he noted that Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha has had a significant impact on the promotion of Irish within the Association since it was established around ten years ago.
Cáit then spoke and gave a comprehensive overview of the work of Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha, the awards presented each winter, the grants made available at least twice a year, and the support provided to clubs. “We love our work,” she said, “and no one should hesitate to get in touch with us at any time.”
Cáit then introduced Sinéad Ní Mhearnóg, who works with Teanga Tí, the branch of Glór na nGael that focuses on using Irish in the home. Those in attendance were very interested in hearing her suggestions for family-focused Irish language events in clubs.
It was then time for Clíodhna Ní Dhufaigh to address the group, and she was warmly welcomed. Clíodhna outlined the review that had been carried out on the Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha targets. The term “targets” refers to the list of recommended activities for clubs. The list has been reduced and now contains 40 items — 15 required for a bronze award, 25 for silver, and 35 for gold. Clíodhna noted that there are now some mandatory targets, and that clubs are also allowed to create and include their own targets if they are not already listed. All of this information is clearly set out in the newly published handbook.
The group then broke into smaller workshops, led by different speakers. Clubs aiming for a gold award were guided by Séamie Ó Néill (CLG Baile Buadáin Naomh Éanna and Dublin GAA Irish Language Officer). Those working towards silver joined Conor Ó Gallchóir (CLG Chloich Cheann Fhaola and Donegal GAA Irish Language Officer), while Seán Ó Maoilsté and Seán de Paor, Development Officers, spoke with those preparing to apply for a bronze award.
The representatives then returned to the main room and enjoyed a lovely lunch together, provided by Croke Park.
As they said their goodbyes, the officers agreed it had been a worthwhile and valuable day. They headed back to their clubs in the spring sunshine, strengthened and inspired by the conversations that took place in Croke Park on March 21st. A gallery from the conference can be viewed here.
