Cúntóirí Teanga’s Training Day

The Cúntóirí Teanga (language assistants) came together last week in the offices of Foras na Gaeilge, Dublin for a day of training. The cúntóirí are working in Irish-medium schools in Gaeltacht Service Towns and Irish language Líonraí towns (towns that have been identified under the language planning process) located in different parts of the country .

The day began with a yoga and mindfulness workshop facilitated by Ciarán Mac Fhearghusa from Óga Yoga. He gave us tips and examples of how to use yoga and mindfulness at school. This was followed by a presentation from Edel Ní Bhraonáin, Gaelbhratach Manager at Gael Linn, who explained the WWWWH of the Gaelbhratach scheme. She emphasised the importance of normalising the Irish language by creating opportunities for the pupils to speak Irish beyond the confines of the classroom and formal Irish lessons.

In the afternoon, Frainc Mac Cionnaith – Manager of the Business and Enterprise department with Glór na nGael, gave a presentation on the GRADAIM Gnó na hÉireann scheme, and in particular the Fiontraí Óg (young entrepreneur) section of the scheme. Two Fiontraí Óg awards are given a year to two young people who demonstrate a flair for entrepreneurship in Irish. The winners of ‘Fiontraí Óg na bliana‘ show these characteristics; entrepreneurship, imaginative ability in his/her approach, projecting a positive image of the Irish language in business, service in Irish for the customer or client.

Sara Ní Chuireáin, Manager of Scéim na gCúntóirí Teanga would like to thank all the speakers, the cúntóirí themselves, Elaine and Niamh from the Glór na nGael team and Foras na Gaeilge for providing the workspace for the day.

The Scéim na gCúntóirí Teanga Scheme outside the Gaeltacht is run by Glór na nGael on behalf of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and the Media, as a specific measure from the Action Plan 2018 – 2022 for the 20 Year Strategy for the Irish Language 2010-2030.
