The Joe McDonnagh Foundation Launch

Aogán Ó Fearghaíl, President of the GAA will launch a new foundation in Croke Park this week to encourage and give recognition to the promotion of the Irish language in the Gaelic Athletic Association. Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha is a joint support scheme between Glór na nGael and the GAA itself for clubs wishing to promote the language.

The Foundation aims to help develop that promotion in a more measured and planned fashion. Glór na nGael will offer help to the Oifigeach Gaeilge to give them direction, support and ideas to build on the good work that has already been done within the club. Grants will be available from the Foundation to help realise plans and medals will be awarded to clubs for various levels of achievement in promotion of the language.

The Joe McDonagh medal will be presented to clubs registered with the Foundation for implementing a number of actions with regards the promotion of the language within the club. The medal will be a noted sign of achievement and recognition for continued work on behalf of the language.

As a club completes a recommended number of activities, bronze, silver and gold medals will be awarded as appropriate. The awarding of a gold medal will be a sign of prestige and esteem. The medal will serve as both motivation and recognition, providing a clear attainable goal for clubs wishing to facilitate a role for the language within their membership.

The foundation, Fóndúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Donncha will be launched in Croke Park at 7.30pm on Wednesday, 30 November 2016.
