Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha discussed at County Board meeting in Sligo

Glór na nGael received an invitation to the latest meeting of the Sligo GAA County Board, and our Development Officer Honoria Ní Mháille was delighted to be present with them last week to give a presentation on Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha.

Honoria spoke with the County Irish Language and Culture Officer, Joe Brady from the Naomh Molaise GAA club, regarding the current status of the Irish language in the county and the possibilities for the future. He emphasised the importance of the language and culture to the county: “Sligo has a strong history in terms of music, culture, and language, and I know from dealing with clubs that the Irish language is strong in them, even with individual members in those clubs, and we are looking forward to capitalising on that energy.”

He explained that the County Board previously ran a scheme to award Gaeltacht scholarships, but the pandemic put a stop to it. Joe is now looking to reinstate that scheme in order to give young people the opportunity to attend a Gaeltacht course. Joe is already doing a lot to promote the Irish language and culture through Scór na n-Óg and Scór Sinsir and mentioned that some clubs are undertaking Irish language classes in the winter.

According to Joe, “We hope to be able to direct a few clubs towards registering with Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha to get that support and build on the efforts they are currently making themselves.”

Glór na nGael is extremely grateful to the County Board in Sligo for providing us with this special opportunity.
