Glór na nGael is delighted to provide financial support to 71 GAA clubs in 24 counties across the country as part of the Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha grant scheme. Grants totalling €31,930 were awarded to clubs to support them in increasing the use, learning and visibility of the Irish language. In addition to the investment from Glór na nGael and the GAA, clubs provide match funding at a level of €1 for every €2 provided through the grant. This means that there is a minimum total investment of €47,895 in promoting the Irish language in the clubs.
Six clubs successfully secured funding to help them support families who are raising their children through the medium of Irish. Grants were also awarded to a significant number of clubs to increase Irish Language signage and to run Irish language classes for adults, children and young people. A number of other clubs received grants to organise a series of social events through the medium of Irish, including a mixture of pop-up Gaeltachts, Irish-language cinema nights, nature, music and dance workshops, and talks on the Irish language and local heritage.
More than 240 clubs are registered with the Foundation in 31 counties across the country this year. Club forums have been organised in every county in the country to bring the Irish language officers of clubs together to share ideas, experiences and insights, as well as a significant number of one-to-one meetings to support clubs that want to promote the Irish language among their members and within their communities.
Clubs are currently preparing to take part in the adjudication process, with clubs seeking bronze, silver or gold medals in recognition of the fantastic work being carried out in clubs to promote the Irish language. The medals will be awarded to successful clubs at an event in Croke Park on 4 December.
