Service Level Agreement signed between Kerry County Council and Glór na nGael

A Service Level Agreement has been agreed and signed between Kerry County Council (KCC) and Glór na nGael regarding the employment and management of a Oifigeach Pleanála Teanga (Language Planning Officer) for the Cahersiveen Language Plan.

At a meeting between both parties at the KCC offices, Christy O’Connor, Director of Corporate Services at KCC, and Lorcán Mac Gabhann, Chief Executive of Glór na nGael, signed the agreement.

Also in attendance were KCC Chief Executive Moira Murrell, Aodán Mac Gearailt, Irish Language Officer (KCC), and Dara Ó Baoill, Communications & Marketing Manager of Glór na nGael.

Welcoming the agreement, Mac Gabhann expressed his anticipation that a Language Planning Officer would be located in Cahersiveen without delay and that activities to strengthen the language in the town would commence soon. “We are very pleased that Glór na nGael has been asked to take a central role in this project,” he said. “The recruitment process will begin immediately, and we hope to implement a comprehensive language plan with the support and partnership of all local stakeholders, including community groups, businesses, and schools.”

Aodán Mac Gearailt described it as unequivocally good news for the future of the Irish language in the town and surrounding area. “As the Irish Language Officer with KCC, I am very pleased that Cahersiveen has been recognised as a Baile Seirbhíse Gaeltachta (Gaeltacht Service Town) and that the position for the Oifigeach Pleanála Teanga is now being advertised.

“KCC is working diligently to push this project forward, and we greatly appreciate that Glór na nGael, with their team of experts in this field, is on board to enable the OPT to implement a meaningful action plan. The OPT and the people of Cahersiveen will have our full support here at the Council to ensure the language flourishes in the area,” he said.

The position for the Oifigeach Pleanála Teanga is to be advertised immediately, and all information regarding the job specification is available at
