Glór na nGael has published a program of activities that will provide guidance for those organising play groups through the medium of Irish.

This new publication,Clár Spraoi do Ghrúpaí Súgartha, is an à la carte activity program where activities can be chosen from 120 activities across 30 themes.

Suzy Uí Ghallachóir, from Letterkenny and owner of Na Tootsies Beaga, wrote the book for Glór na nGael. It will be a great resource for both Irish language playgroups and families.

Speaking about the publication, Marcas Mac Ruairí, manager of Glór na nGael’s Teanga Tí department, said: “Parents across Ireland meet together with their preschool-aged children to give them the opportunity to play with other children and develop social skills.

“Glór na nGael supports playgroups through the medium of Irish, but it is the parents themselves who organise the playgroups in local community halls, libraries, GAA clubs, and other venues.

“We recognise the need for advice and practical support. To this end, we published a handbook in 2021 titled Bunú agus Feidhmiú Grúpaí Súgartha, which provides guidance for parents on how to set up a playgroup, the resources needed, health and safety steps to take, and work suggestions for each session.

“This new publication is an extension of Bunú agus Feidhmiú Grúpaí Súgartha. In this book, the reader will find a work plan that they can use when planning sessions for a group.

“This is not a curriculum but an à la carte program where activities can be chosen based on interests, resources, and the abilities of the group.

“Glór na nGael would like to thank Suzy Uí Ghallachóir for designing this work, Clár Spraoi Do Ghrúpaí Súgartha. Her work will provide a solid foundation for the early developmental years of children attending the groups we support.

“Glór na nGael hopes that this will improve the quality of playgroups and make the management of the groups easier for those organising them,” he said.

As a support for Clár Spraoi Do Ghrúpaí Súgartha, Glór na nGael has placed a series of videos on YouTube discussing rhymes and poems, yoga for children, and mindfulness for children.

Áine Ní Shúilleabháin, author of Bróga Nua, Ciarán Mac Fhearghusa of Óga Yoga, and Katie McGreal from Solas Relaxation present the videos and they can be found here. We thank all of them and Súgradh Productions for producing them for us.
