A new clubhouse for CLG Chill Uird in Cork was officially opened at a special event on Saturday May 16. It was a great honour for the club that the President of the GAA, Jarlath Burns, along with other distinguished guests, joined them to celebrate the official opening ceremony.
CLG Chill Uird is a small but proud rural club located north of Fermoy in County Cork. The club includes Gaelic football, hurling, ladies’ football, camogie, and handball. However, the club’s activities are not confined to the playing field alone. They also take an active part in Scór competitions and have a strong tradition of promoting the Irish language within the club.
For the past ten years, the people of Cill Uird have been placing the Irish language at the centre of club life. The club has earned a silver award from Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha in recognition of their ongoing work. They organise classes for Leaving Certificate students, and Irish is highly visible throughout the club, with members understanding the important connection between our language and our games.
The club has taken a wonderful opportunity with the development of these new facilities, making all signage both outside and inside the clubhouse exclusively in Irish. It is no small achievement, and Irish could be widely heard on the day — from the GAA President, from members of the club committee who delivered speeches, and from the wider community who were present.
