Caife agus Comhluadar is a virtual meetup which gives parents raising their children through the medium of Irish an opportunity to meet weekly for company, conversation, advice and a few rhymes no matter where in the world they are based. We meet online on Google Hangouts every Wednesday at 11:00, one Saturday per month at 10:00 and one Tuesday per month at 16:00.
At the sessions, parents have the opportunity to speak to other parents who are using Irish in the home. Every session is different and the conversation is directed by the needs of the families taking part. One week we could be discussing the best option for a parent who is in need of particular terminology to use with their family, and the next week, the families could be sharing their childrens’ favourite books or resources. Each session is unique to the needs of the families who take part. After a short chat, we sing and practise some rhyme time together – many new versions of rhymes have been learned along the way from each other!
Aoife, a parent in Co. Kerry says, “I started the sessions online with Sinéad when my son was born in 2022. We both really enjoyed them and we learned a lot. Not only did we have plenty of fun and craic but I had the opportunity to talk to other mothers about the challenges with young children. Now that my maternity leave is over I really miss the sessions.’
Everyone is welcome to take part, we have welcomed families from far and wide to the group so far. As a support for the families, we also have a Whatsapp group in which families get the chance to ask questions, share advice, suggest resources or terminology and reminders are also sent out about our sessions for our busy parents.
