The Irish Language at the Heart of Life on Oileán Chléire

Órla recently spent a special day on Oileán Chléire in the company of Ruairí Ó Donnabháin and the local committee, meeting with businesses registered for Gradaim Gnó na hÉireann and discussing their participation in Ardán and in Luachanna.

During the visit, Órla met with various members of the community and business owners who are working tirelessly to place the Irish language at the centre of island life. The enthusiasm and community pride were clearly visible everywhere she visited.

Órla said:

“It was truly inspiring to spend time on Oileán Chléire and to see first-hand the incredible work being carried out by Ruairí, the committee and the local community. They have a clear vision for the Irish language and are ensuring that it can be naturally heard and seen throughout the island.”

Oileán Chléire is renowned as one of the most vibrant and welcoming Gaeltacht communities in the country, and pioneering work is being carried out there to provide both visitors and locals with an authentic Irish-language experience.

With the arrival of summer and large numbers of tourists expected to visit the island in the coming months, the community is working hard to ensure that the Irish language and the traditional welcome remain central to every aspect of the visitor experience. Local businesses, community organisations and island residents are working together to nurture and strengthen the island’s natural, cultural and linguistic environment.

Oileán Chléire is a Gaeltacht island located off the coast of West Cork, and is well known for its beautiful landscape, rich heritage and friendly Irish-speaking community. The island is one of the southernmost inhabited places in Ireland and attracts visitors from all over the world each year.

The island is also recognised as a place where culture, heritage and the Irish language are closely interwoven. Irish-language courses, storytelling festivals, nature walks and community events take place throughout the year, adding to the energy and vibrancy of the area.

In addition, there is a strong emphasis on sustainability and local produce on the island, with farmers’ markets, craft products and marine and outdoor activities all contributing to the unique experience of the place.
