Glór na nGael staff are currently registering committees for the 2012 competition and entry forms are being sent to over 150 interested groups across the island
‘Last year Glór na nGael was celebrating 50 years of work' said Lorcán Mac Gabhann, CEO of Glór na nGael. 'Our development officers contacted committees who had, perhaps, been busy and active in past times and with changes in population and so on had become less active. However voluntary work has always been at the heart of Glór na nGael success and of course when the competition was first announced half a century ago, voluntary work was one of the few beacons of hope in this country. In many ways the wheel has turned full circle and we in Glór na nGael are very proud of all the voluntary and selfless work our committees carry out for the language and culture all over the island and abroad.'
Glór na nGael awards over €150,000 of prizes annually to local committees and the competition gives recognition to the efforts of committees in promoting the Irish language. Among the prizes there are prizes for groups with the aid of employees, groups without employees, groups in the Gaeltacht and outside the Gaeltacht, school and college groups and prizes for the Irish abroad.
Glór na nGael committees can be found all across Ireland and ten countries have international committees while last year over sixty secondary schools took part in the competition sponsored by Foinse for school clubs.
The winners of the 2011 competion will be announced on Seán Bán Breathnachs radio show on Raidió na Gaeltacht on 10th February and those prizes will be presented at a national event in Carton House in Maynooth on February 25th.
