Umbrella group for the USA
Glór na nGael has expressed its appreciation to the participants who attended the conference ‘Fís Ghaeilge Mheiriceá Thuaidh.’
The majority of those at the conference agreed that there is a need for an umbrella group in the United States of America that will represent Irish speakers there in a broad range of areas.
Describing the conference that was organised in New York during the weekend of 16-18 May 2008, Glór na nGael Director, Lorcán Mac Gabhann said:
“It was clear from what was said at the conference that there is great demand on the ground for an umbrella group. It was articulated at the conference that voluntary groups cannot provide classes while simultaneously addressing a wide range of other matters such as finding funding from disparate sources, finding qualified teachers from Ireland and managing publicity in the English media in both America and Ireland.”
Participants at the conference decided to take the step to establish a ‘blog-site’ for debate in early June of this year and to take the relevant steps towards establishing an umbrella group.
Glór na nGael will act as a facilitator on the blog-site for three weeks, at which point the decision to establish the new umbrella group, or otherwise, will be taken.
Mr Mac Gabhann explained: “It is the Irish language groups in the United States that will make the decision whether or not to establish this umbrella group. Glór na nGael will give them every support whichever decision is made.”
The blog-site’s address will be published on 30 May and opinion’s and debate on this important matter will be welcomed.
