Samsung to extend predictive-texting in Irish

Mobile phone company, Samsung, is to make predictive text through the medium of Irish available across the whole of Ireland.

Samsung launched predictive text in Irish during 2008 and is set to receive an award from Glór na nGael in recognition of its service to Irish speakers.

The service is not currently not available north of the border as Northern Ireland falls under the UK market where handsets don’t have the Irish setting.

However, following representations from Glór na nGael, Samsung is taking measures to rectify this anomaly.

A representative from Samsung was unable to confirm to Glór na nGael how long it will take to implement the changes, but a commitment was given to keep the group informed.

In an e.mail, the representative said: “If anyone that with a Tocco that doesn’t have the Irish setting and would like to have it, they can send their phone to Samsung in Dublin office where the software can be loaded.”

Samsung has told Glór na nGael that it realises this is not an ideal answer but it does give users an  option until the Irish settings are available in the north.

Expressing his appreciation to the phone company, Glór na nGael director, Lorcán Mac Gabhann said: “Glór na nGael thanks Samsung for the efforts it is making in this regard and looks forward to the extension of this service to the whole of Ireland.

Samsung has been awarded Trofaí na gComhlachtaí by Glór na nGael for its measures to provide predictive text through the medium of Irish.

The Glór na nGael awards will be presented in Gaoth Dobhair, County Donegal, on 28 March 2009.
