Glór na nGael reception
The Canadian Embassy in Ireland is to host a special reception in honour of Cumann na Gaeltachta, Canada, that is to receive an award from Glór na nGael.
The event will be held in at 6.00pm 27 March 2009 in Óstán Gaoth Dobhair, County Donegal, in acknowledgement of all the Global Gaeilge winners.
Richard Philippe, the Commercial Councillor with the Embassy, will be joined at the event by representatives from Cumann na Gaeltachta and Glór na nGael.
Congratulating the Cumann, Glór na nGael manager, Nóra Welby said: “The work carried by the Cumann na Gaeltachta has been impressive and deserves the highest praise.
“Established just a few years ago, it has created a Gaeltacht in Canada where those who are interested can go and stay to learn Irish.
“Glór na nGael is delighted to give it recognition through this prize.”
Second place in the Global Gaeilge awards will go to the Manchester Irish Language Group. Cumann Gaeilge na hAstráile in Melbourne, Australia also won recognition.
The Glór na nGael awards, with a prize fund of €150,000, are awarded annually to the local voluntary committees that do most to promote the Irish language.
Global Gaeilge, the international part of the competition, was initiated in 2005 to give recognition to Irish language groups oversees.
The presentations will be held in Óstán Gaoth Dobhair on 28 March 2009, the day following the reception with the Canadian Embassy. The respective chairs of Údarás na Gaeltachta and Foras na Gaeilge, Liam Ó Cuinneagáin and Liam Ó Mhaoilmhíchil will jointly present the awards.
The first prize of €50,000 and a trophy will be presented to Comharchumann Forbartha Ghaoth Dobhair, national recognition of what it has achieved in promoting the Irish language during 2008.
