Glór na nGael prizes to be announced
The Glór na nGael prizes for 2008 will be announced live on Raidió na Gaeltachta on Friday morning next week.
The results will be made public on Seán Bán Breathnach’s programme at 9.15am 30 January.
The top prize is valued at €60,000. Ennis in County Clare won this prize for 2007 and all the Glór na nGael committees will be waiting in anticipation of the 2008 results.
In total more than €150,000 worth of prizes are awarded to voluntary Irish language committees from around the country each year.
The competition recognises the voluntary work by many committees to promote the language.
As well as the national community competition, special prizes will go to the most effective Irish language societies abroad.
Daltaí na Gaeilge in New York won first place in the international competition, Global Gaeilge, for 2007.
Another special competition recognises the efforts Irish language societies in third level education institutions.
Adjudication of this competition is not yet complete but the results should be announced in mid February.
