2011 Shortlist of winners announced / Gaeilge

The shortlist for winners in the 2011 competition has now been announced.

‘We have a mixture of both old and new in this years list' said Lorcán Mac Gabhann, CEO of Glór na nGael, 'but all the groups have one thing in common, and that is the progress they have made during the year with all their activities. That progress is a sign of hope for the language at a time when there are so many cutbacks in budgets in every other sector in the country.'

Nóra Welby, Manager of Glór na nGael announced the list of prizewinners in the category for groups providing employment while Lorcán Mac Gabhann announced the winners in the section for committees operating without the benefit of employees All committees on the list will receive prizes..

‘We are announcing the shortlist today but committees are named in no particular order' said Nóra Welby. ‘In the first category five committees are competing for the national prize and they are:  Comharchumann Uíbh Ráthaigh, in Kerry; Comharchumann na Cheathrún Rua, in Galway; Glór Locha Riach, in Loughrea, Galway; Coiste Forbartha Carn Tóchair, in Maghera, Co Derry ( last years national winners) and Gaelphobal an tSratha Báin, Strabane, Co Tyrone. Representatives of these comittees will now go before the independent judges during the Oireachtas in Killarney in November’.

Announcing the shortlist for the second category, for committees without the benefit of employees, Lorcán Mac Gabhann stated that the independent judges would have to choose an overall winner from a list of six committees, three from the Gaeltacht and three from outside the Gaeltacht. The overall winners will not be revealed until the national prizegiving in February, so until then it will be an anxious wait for the first five committees mentioned by Nóra, plus the following committees:  Choiste Pobal an Tulaigh, and  Craobh Maigh Chuilinn, in Galway; Glór na nGael Gort a Choirce, Donegal;  Na Macallaí in Wexford; Glór Breifne in Cavan and Cumann Gaelach Leath Chathail, Downpatrick.

‘We wish every success to all these committees and all those who took part in this years judging process, including community groups, committees in Ireland and abroad, the Irish language groups in the third level colleges, the clubs in the secondary level schools all over the country who take part in our Comórtas G!. We remind all committees that judging is ongoing for the special prizes and we urge committees to send in their reports now for those prizes.
